NPC QUESTS
QUESTS are tasks offered by NPCs that characters can work together to complete in order to earn special rewards. The NPCs offering quests will change from setting to setting, and each NPC will typically offer different rewards for completing their quests.
OOCly, quests are lower-impact ways players can interact with the setting and the metaplot between major game events.
To claim a quest, simply comment to the corresponding thread to let us know which characters will be participating. You should have a minimum of two players participating to claim a quest. Depending on the quest, we may have additional info for you to help you get set up, but then you're free to thread! Once the quest is complete, return here with a link to your thread, and we'll give you a rundown of the rewards.
There are no penalties for backing out of a quest after it's been claimed. If you find you aren't able to complete a quest, or simply don't want to anymore, just let us know so that we can open it back up to be claimed by someone else!
Quests refresh after each Crossing (roughly every 3 months)*, so don't be afraid to give them a try! Each character may only be an active participant in one quest at a time.
* Even if not all quests for a given setting are completed, lore details and special items will never be "lost", so don't worry too much about missing out either. Lore always finds a way. 👻
THE CAVERN
THE FERRYMAN
no subject
The Ferryman's Lantern has created a bubble of safety around the Subterranean City, giving our traveling souls a place to rest, reflect, and prepare for the journey ahead. But The Lantern's reach isn't complete, and there is more to find within The Cavern.
With that in mind, The Ferryman has offered an additional piece of The Lantern's light, contained within a palm-sized shard of glass, for the souls to use as they like — or not at all. It's an opportunity to learn more about The Lantern, its light, and its effects on the population of drifting wraiths.

Whoever populated the winding tunnels of the Subterranean City before left behind a number of signs to guide you through them, marked only with simple iconography. Most of them are straightforward: this tunnel to this square, another to this statue, a third to that landmark. But there are some that don't lead you so directly, and are marked with less straightforward symbols. In particular, some of the signs are clearly marked with a lantern. The Lantern? It's hard to say.
For anyone curious enough to look, there might be insight to be had about The Ferryman, and about their relationship with the ones who came before you.

The Crossing is coming. The Ferryman told you that you would feel it, but what does that mean, really? You've never been here before; how would you know what signs to look out for?
The Ferryman invites you to learn, and the easiest way is to descend to The River again. There's no need to dive in, to invite back the pain of your arrival, but if you wade out into the water — so says The Ferryman — you might find some understanding there.
Or you could dive. If you were very curious, or at least very masochistic.
If anyone is willing to brave a repeat bout with The River, they may be able to uncover what The Ferryman finds so strange about this Crossing in particular...

THE DESERT
THE FERRYMAN
no subject
Back in the Cavern, The Ferryman provided a shard of glass imbued with The Lantern's Light, for the souls to do with as they pleased. They can't offer the same thing now, they say, but they can offer the shards alone.
The shards are special, it seems, and can be imbued with things other than The Lantern's Light. According to The Ferryman, the Desert is an ideal place to bottle (so to speak) something unique.
The catch? You'll need to brave the desert's volatile lightning storms to craft it.
This quest is recommended for 3-4 characters.

The Desert is an ideal place to see the stars. On clear, dark nights, the openness of the horizon creates a broad canvas for the patchwork quilt of night skies that's been assembled here. You might have noticed that some of the constellations look familiar. The Ferryman has noticed, too.
They'd like for someone to make a star map for them, and collect a few of the recognizable constellations from a few of the different worlds you all come from. They say it's a tradition, whenever they visit the Desert.
This quest is recommended for 2-3 characters.

The Desert is quite a bit more bio-diverse than the Cavern was before it. The Ferryman says that they're curious about some of the places and creatures that have appeared here since your arrival, but claims they're not able to spend time exploring due to the requirements of their role.
If you have the time, and are perhaps curious yourself, they'd like you to go on a run to bring something back to them: maybe a souvenir from a location, maybe an item from a creature, or maybe just a story to tell.
This quest is recommended for 2-3 characters.
This quest may be completed multiple times. The mods will generate a new request for each set of characters who wish to perform the quest.

There's something weighing on The Ferryman. It can be hard to tell, sometimes, with their limited expressiveness... but if you speak with them frequently or pay close attention, you'll find that at times they seem distracted. Perhaps even worried.
They have a request. They need volunteers to work with them at The River. It will be painful, and mentally taxing, but The Ferryman has promised that no one will come to any harm. There's something they're trying to understand.
This quest was unlocked by revealing the existence of the First Tolls to The Ferryman.

THE WRAITH
no subject
You may have heard it through the grapevine by now: Allynbee Shepard made a sighting on her way out of the caves, of a wraith that seemed... let's say different than some of the others.
Since then, a note has appeared in your shared "network" of various books and devices, beneath iconography of an eye that might now be familiar to some of you:
And beneath that, a crude map. There's a path to follow, it seems. Is it worth it?

THE WORLD
no subject
The Oasis is close enough to the base of the cliffs that there are some nooks and crannies to explore: rocky formations hide shallow inlets that shoot off from the main water source, and there are a few shaded, narrow shortcuts out to the dunes.
There isn't much else interesting to find there... unless you follow a certain path a certain way, and end up at a small, shallow pool. It's separated from the Oasis itself, tucked away in a pocket of grass surrounded on all sides by stone, and its edges are ringed in vibrant orange marigolds.
Hmm... Is it whispering to you?

You might be (justifiably) sick of caves by now. But there's something curious about the cliffs behind you; they seem to shift when your back is turned, as if the landscape itself is trying to play a prank on you.
If you poke around enough, though, you might find evidence that there's more than meets the eye here. At times, the cliffs reveal small maps or clues carved into the stone, tips and tricks from someone long gone on how to navigate the shifting tunnels.
Perhaps there's treasure at the other end? Or more information on who left these scribbles for you in the first place? It's a way to kill a particularly long afternoon, anyway.

The Ferryman's curiosity continues! They say they want to know more about the places and creatures in the Marsh, but claim they're not able to spend time exploring due to the requirements of their role.

Thanks to the hard work of some of your fellow souls, The Ferryman has learned more about the developing situation with The River, and with your memories. However, they remain concerned, and they have decided that perhaps it's time to provide you all with more tools.
There's something you'll have to do first. The Ferryman has asked for interested volunteers to help them — and they promise that this errand won't be quite so stressful as the last one.

It seems there are some competing perspectives, out here in this in-between.
Another note, similar to the one Shepard and Soo Won followed in The Desert, appears innocuously within your shared network of notes and conversation:
And as before, a map to follow, presumably to where The Wraith will be waiting.

You might have heard by now that the flowers will speak to you, one way or another. But how they speak appears to be slightly different. These orange ones in particular seem to only speak when it suits them.
For a couple of you, it seems, it begins to suit them:
