As explained by The Ferryman, the request is thus:
— Sunny and Nagito must lay in The River and allow themselves to sink.
— While doing so, they must try to focus past any familiar sensations and pay attention to any unfamiliar ones. They are looking for gaps/static/anything that might suggest a memory might have been altered or incomplete.
— Either of them may tap out at any time, at which point The Ferryman will pull them both from The River.
— The Ferryman may also intervene themselves if they feel it necessary.
Sunny will experience the normal effects of The River as mentioned on the Desert's setting page, as well as a handful of visceral memories that do not belong to him. These are not episodic (like flashbacks) and do not contain any speech/visuals, but rather only physical sensations and emotions. They might be positive, negative, or neutral, but Sunny will experience many fewer unfamiliar memories in comparison to Nagito. With that in mind, he will not experience inconsistencies even if he's able to focus on them.
With Sunny, The Ferryman is more likely to intervene earlier. Let us know if you think they would pull him from The River before he taps out himself.
If you have any questions or need any additional clarification, don't hesitate to let us know!
