PREMISE

PREMISE

Hey, kid. Good to see you again.

I know, it’s painful. There’s no getting around that, sorry to say. Especially this first part: leaving wherever you were Before, and making it Here. Haven’t done it myself, obviously, but I’ve talked to plenty who have. That’s what they say. That the first step hurts, but it’s quick. The rest of it takes longer, but it gets easier as you go along.

But you made it. You got yourself Here, and now we can get started on the journey to what’s Next.

We’re going to have to Cross. Can’t tell you much about where we’re Crossing to, because that depends on you, and on everybody else coming with us. All I can tell you is that we gotta get from Here to There. Do that a few times, and eventually we’ll get all of you where you need to go.

I’m not going to lie. It's a difficult journey. You can’t just Cross whenever you want, see. But you’ll know when the time is coming. You’ll feel it. However tough you think you were Before, nobody’s tough during The Crossing.

Don’t worry about it, though. That’s what I’m here for.

I can keep you safe through The Crossing. I can show you the path to walk to get from Here to There. It won’t be easy, but you’ll make it through intact. And believe me, not everybody makes it through, much less intact.

There’s a cost. There always is. You’ll have to let go of something if you want to make it through. That hurts in a different way, I know, but it’s worth it. Believe me.

Or try to make it on your own. I sure can’t stop you. Just keep in mind: you can’t go back, no matter how bad you might wanna try.

With love,
The Ferryman

[community profile] thecrossing is a panfandom roleplaying game about death, identity, and letting go. Characters are dead, and have entered a transition period between their previous lives and what comes after... whatever that may be. They must navigate ever-shifting landscapes that mold themselves based on the thoughts, feelings, and memories of those that encounter them. Each traversal between settings is referred to as "The Crossing": a period where this sliver of spacetime goes into flux, and characters' souls become the most exposed.

Traveling safely means giving up memories to The Ferryman, who uses them to guide characters' paths. Traveling without The Ferryman means characters do not have to pay the toll — at the risk of losing much, much more. Clinging to the past makes the journey forward that much more difficult; at what point is it time to make your peace, and let go?

On the other hand... you can't seem to shake the feeling that something isn't right. What if there's a chance that something has come to corrupt your journey from Before to After? How will you be able to stop it, if you've already let go of too much?

It's time to choose. It's time to Cross.
